Eco Certification
The Duke Boutique Hotel is the only Eco Certified Hotel in Gozo complying with all the requirements of the Malta Tourism Authority eco certification scheme which was launched in 2002 with the intention of creating more awareness and promoting good environmental practice amongst hotel operators. Ten years later the scheme evolved from a purely environmental scheme to one that promotes sustainability. The shift came about as a result of changing trends and the need to have a more holistic scheme which covers not just environmental good practice but also socioeconomic and cultural sustainability. This change also led to international recognition by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The main themes are, effective sustainability planning, waste management, supporting local produce and promoting 0km food, maximizing social and economic benefits for the local community, conserving water and energy, quality health and safety, enhancing cultural heritage and reducing negative impacts to the environment.
